In a shocking twist of fate, Americans turn their eyes to the cheese-tastic state of Wisconsin. A recent study done by GOBankingRates has found 30 cities where affordability and livability best intersect.
These rankings were completed with a “livability score” in mind, where GOBankingRates combined their data with the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine the cost-of-living index in each state.
Not one, but two cities in the big cheddar made this top 30 list, with Superior sitting at number 23 and Wausau ranking third overall.

According to the study, the city of Wausau has an average home value of $238,916, almost $100,000 lower than the state-wide home value. The average monthly mortgage is $1,368, with the median household income sitting around $61,877. For some quick math, this makes the average gross income around $2,379 on a bi-weekly basis, with the monthly gross income sitting around $4,758. Pretty sweet deal.
In terms of Superior, Wisconsin, the average home value is $225,498, with an average monthly mortgage of $1,291 and a median household income of $63,415. Breaking that down even further, you’re looking at an average bi-weekly income of $2,439, and a monthly income of $4,878.
In either situation, the average monthly mortgage payment is less than a third of your monthly income, making these two cities excellent places for prospective homebuyers.
