As difficult as it can be to admit, traveling isn't always safe or easy, especially if you're a woman. Some destinations, especially those where women's rights are more limited than they are in the Global North may offer unexpected challenges which can severely hinder your vacation. Luckily, for every country that isn't the best choice for solo female travelers, there's one that is.
When solo traveling, it's important to take necessary precautions, this is especially true if you do not speak the language. Stay vigilant, do your research, and share your travel plans with friends and family. Fear shouldn't completely dictate your travels, but it's always important to be safe.
To keep things simple, we've decided on one country per continent (well, almost every continent—sorry, Antarctica!).
Starting off with North America, our first recommended destination for solo female travelers is Costa Rica. A longtime favorite of snowbirds, this tropical paradise is sure to delight no matter the time of year. Costa Rica is affordable and politically stable with a large expat community that will have you feeling right at home.
Country Suggestions
Uruguay may not be the first country you think of in South America, but it's one of the best choices for solo female travel. Uruguay has a low crime rate and is less touristy than surrounding countries, which makes it a hidden gem. According to experienced female solo travelers, Uruguayans are welcome and accommodating.
While most travelers see the Maghreb (the Northwest) as the gateway to Africa, many other African countries are extremely welcoming to women traveling alone. Botswana in particular is ranked as a favorite for its safety, stability, and infrastructure. The secluded safaris and gorgeous lodges don't hurt, either!
In terms of Oceania, you can't go wrong with a visit to New Zealand. The stunning landscapes will take your breath away and are perfect for an international road trip if you don't mind van life! Additionally, you won't have to worry about a language barrier or too much culture shock.
There are a few obvious choices for Asia such as Thailand and Japan, but we want to take the metaphorical road less traveled with Singapore. While Singapore can be expensive, it's also one of the safest countries in the world. As a bonus, the central location means that expanding your trip to Southeast Asia is super easy.
The last country we want to suggest is Iceland. Known as one of the safest countries on earth, Iceland's small population and easy navigation mean that you don't have to take your travel worries with you. Tracing the ring road around this picturesque country is the best way to see all the beauty that Iceland has to offer.
Final Thoughts
As with all countries, be mindful of where and how you travel. Even the safest countries still have the risk of petty crime in city centers and dimly-lit areas. Stay aware of yourself and make sure you respect local cultures.
While different countries may have different attitudes towards women, it's always good to travel with an open mind. Many people are welcoming, both to travelers and new faces in general, and will want to help you enjoy their country as best as you can. Who knows, you may make wonderful connections in the most unexpected of places!
