The Best Travel Podcasts You Should Check Out

The world is truly your oyster. With enough wits (and financial planning), you can see the world exactly as you want to.

But where do you begin? Ideas are one thing, but actually figuring out the details is a whole other beast. On top of flights, car bookings, travel, and other accommodations, there’s the fun stuff you also have to think about. Which experiences are actually worthwhile? What cities are the best for tourists, and which have become “too touristy”?

You can take your time reading Reddit threads and Buzzfeed articles about where and when and why you should or shouldn’t go somewhere. Or… you could just listen. There are countless travel podcasts out there that can help you figure out exactly what you’re looking for. Here are a few that we recommend.

Amateur Traveler

Hosted by long-time travel journalist Chris Christensen, the Amateur Traveler podcast covers all of your basics. It covers how to navigate travel budgeting, packing, and different styles of travel for places all over the world.

This is the ultimate one-stop shop for any novice globetrotter, proven time and time again by its countless accolades.

The Thoughtful Travel Podcast

This show does more than highlight must-sees around the world. The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is more of a conversation, highlighting travel stories and covering important topics that aren’t often discussed when it comes to trip planning.

The host, Amanda Kendle, is a long-term travel writer who’s been sharing her stories since 2005. Alongside her blog and podcast, she also has a Thoughtful Travellers Book Club. You can find Amanda and all her work here

Rick Steves is a long-time expert on European travel. He started his business back in 1976, creating guidebooks, a television show, a travel column, and a popular radio show that encourages Americans to make the trip across the pond.

His work focuses primarily on affordability, while still ensuring that you’ll have an enjoyable and eye-opening experience.

Rick has his own website full of free travel information, or you can find his weekly radio show here

Travel In 10

Hosted by David Brodie and Tim Johnson, Travel In 10 shares hotels, restaurants, festivals, and other activities in a neatly packed 10 to 20-minute episode.

The podcast started up in 2005, and according to its biography, is “currently the #1 travel podcast in Canada.” Alongside city highlights, they’ll also occasionally discuss any travel-related news.

Travel In 10 is a part of Voyascape Productions, which hosts a plethora of travel podcasts you can enjoy.

Where To Go

The podcast Where To Go blends travel and lifestyle together. Each episode provides an in-depth look into a city, country, or topic that has to do with traveling. The hosts, James Atkinson and Lucy Richards, are usually joined by a rotating cast of travel specialists, from writers to cartographers and content creators.

What makes this particular podcast so special, however, is the inclusion of “mindful travel.” And we don’t mean as in a meditative experience. Here, mindful travel involves traveling with the intent of bolstering local communities. The phrase, “leave a space better than you found it,” is a driving force behind this show.
