10 Reasons You Could Get Stopped At Airport Security & 10 Ways To Handle It

Keep Calm and Carry On

No one likes going through airport security, let alone being stopped by an agent. But before you lose your hair at the interruption, we have a few common reasons those stops happen, and what you should do to keep your cool.

1. Random Checks

Unfortunately, some passengers really do draw the short straw. As annoying as additional screening can be, a lot of security stops are just random luck of the draw decisions. The good news is that these usually pass pretty quickly, so long as you follow instructions.

2. Constantly Changing Lines

TSA lines are a lot like the grocery store: some appear faster, and now it’s a last-second decision on whether to make the switch. Security doesn’t usually stop you from doing so, but constant flip-flopping can earn you additional screening.

3. Suspicious Behavior

The list of “suspicious behavior” is a long one, but a few mannerisms stick out more than others. Anything from yawning and wringing your hands to simply clearing your throat can flag you for additional screening.

4. Carrying Prohibited Items

Flying can be a pain, especially with all the rules, but it’s important to know them before boarding. Check the airport’s website for a comprehensive list of prohibited items; make sure you pack accordingly to avoid any hiccups at security.

5. Last-Minute Ticket Purchases

Believe it or not, last-minute ticket purchases can cause additional screening; it’s actually considered suspicious behavior and can get you flagged at security checkpoints. It’s rare, but it does happen when you book tickets at the very last second.

6. Intoxication

Layovers can really take it out of you, but security isn’t a fan of intoxicated passengers. Don’t expect a warm welcome if you’re inebriated—if anything, expect additional security and a longer clearance period.

7. Talking Too Much

If you haven’t noticed by now, airport security can be a little…touchy. While most won’t care about the odd chatty Cathy, you don’t want to make small talk either. Some security may see it as an intentional distraction, which could land you in hot water.

8. Your Paperwork Isn’t in Order

Airports are well-oiled machines run on the efficiency of crew and passengers alike. Expired passports, unsuitable identification, or carrying improper documentation only slows things down. It also gets you in trouble with airport security.

9. Carrying Too Much Money

Hey, this isn’t a heist movie! Regardless of your reason, carrying too much money can get you flagged by security. Agents easily get suspicious if you’re just walking around with thousands in cash, so either leave the stacks at home or invest in some plastic.

10. Inappropriate Clothing

Whether it’s metallic accessories or too many layers, security can stop you for inappropriate clothing. Make sure you take off any jackets or sweaters, and dump all your jewelry into the bins to keep things moving.

But what happens if you do get stopped by security? Before you panic, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Remain Calm

The most important thing you can do is remain calm. Most additional clearances only consist of a pat down or a full-body scan, so try not to panic about any beeping machines. It’ll probably be over before you know it!

2. Follow Their Instructions

Listen carefully to instructions and make sure you follow them. There’s no shame in asking for clarification either, especially if you’re trying to make both your lives easier. You actually have the right to do so!

3. Have All Your Documents Ready

You may have handed the wrong ID to the agent, but don’t make the same mistake if they stop you. Ideally, you’d have everything from your passport to your boarding pass in an easily accessible place. You can also keep paperwork in a Ziploc bag for better organization.

4. Answer Questions as Best You Can

If security agents ask any questions, answer as honestly as you can. You’ll likely get a few run-of-the-mill questions like where you’re going, what your business is, and how long you’ll be staying. They ask a lot of passengers these questions, so don’t worry too much about the added protocol.

5. Ask Questions

No one said you can’t ask questions of your own! If you need something clarified, ask. If you’re confused about the hold-up, inquire. Just make sure you’re polite throughout, no matter how annoying the process is—airport security can definitely cause missed flights.

6. Try Not to Argue With Them

Hold-ups can be irksome, especially if you’re cutting it close to boarding times. But don’t pick fights with the agents. Security has a long list of suspicious behaviors, and you can count on aggression being one of them.

7. Be Patient

Security clearance isn’t always a one-and-done experience. You may be tired, you may be running late, but don’t lose your cool with the agents. A little patience goes a long way in a situation like this.

8. Read the Rules Beforehand

One of the best ways to avoid hiccups is to brush up on the rules beforehand. Know what’s allowed in your bag. Bring the right ID. Arrive early to avoid any headaches. As annoying as airport security is, passengers can do a lot on their end to smooth the process.

9. Know Your Rights

That agent may be an authority figure, but that doesn’t mean they can overstep. You’re well within your rights to a lawyer or to file a complaint with the airline if you were unfairly treated during security.

10. Consider TSA PreCheck

If you really want to skirt the lines, consider TSA PreCheck. It’s available in over 200 airports and boasts low security times (as little as five minutes in some cases). At $85, the cost is a little steep, but it could be worth it if you’re a frequent flyer.
