20 Most Dangerous Prisons In America

America’s Most Intense Accommodations

America’s most dangerous prisons range from high-tech federal bunkers to aging state penitentiaries that have seen better days. While the staff works hard to keep things orderly, the combination of high-profile inmates and overcrowded wings often leads to a pretty high-stress environment. With that in mind, here are 20 places you want to avoid at all costs.

1. ADX Florence

Located deep in the Colorado mountains, this federal “Supermax” prison is reserved for the worst of the worst offenders. There’s little prisoner interaction here, as inmates spend twenty-three hours a day locked in soundproof concrete cells. It’s nicknamed “The Alcatraz of the Rockies” because no one has ever escaped.

2. Rikers Island

This massive jail complex in New York City is infamous for its chaotic atmosphere and frequent reports of staff and inmate conflicts. Even though the city has plans to close it down by the end of 2026, it remains a high-tension zone where thousands of detainees are processed every single day. You'd likely feel the stress just walking near the bridge that connects the island to the rest of the world.

3. Louisiana State Penitentiary

Formerly a plantation, “Angola” is a prison farm that spans eighteen thousand acres—about the size of Manhattan. High-security inmates usually spend their days tending to farm crops in the hot Southern heat. They hold an annual public rodeo, but outside of that, this place is serious business.

9. Attica Correctional Facility

Immortalized by the uprising that took place in 1971, Attica has been one of NY’s most notorious prisons for decades. It’s maximum-security with tight regulations and a lot of well-equipped officers. Rules are enforced here, and there’s no reason for another scene like the one that made it so famous.

12. Folsom State Prison

Thanks to Johnny Cash, this California prison might be the most famous one on the list, but it’s no walk in the park. It was the first maximum-security prison in the state and was built using granite quarried right on-site by the inmates themselves. You’d find that the heavy stone architecture makes it feel like a medieval castle designed for modern times.
