20 Photos Every Traveler Takes

20 Photos Every Traveler Takes

These Classic Shots Always End Up in Your Camera Roll

No matter where you go, travelers tend to collect the same kinds of photos along the way. Some of them are genuinely beautiful, some are highly predictable, and some only make sense coming from someone who's fully enthralled in the excitement of being somewhere new. You may swear you’ll take a completely original set of pictures next time, but then the usual favorites start happening almost automatically. Here are 20 photos every traveler takes.

1. The Airport Window Shot

This one usually happens before the trip has even properly started. You’re sitting near the gate, staring out at the plane, and suddenly it feels important to capture the moment. It’s half excitement, half bragging to your Instagram followers that you're off to cooler places.

2. The Passport & Boarding Pass Picture

There’s always that quick photo of your passport next to the boarding pass or tucked into your bag. It feels organized, stylish, and slightly more dramatic than the actual travel process deserves. You tell yourself it’s just for the memory, but it also says, “Look at me, I’m going somewhere.”

3. The Plane Wing in the Sky

It's almost obligatory to take the "plane wing in the sky" pic if you have a window seat. It doesn’t matter that millions of nearly identical photos already exist. Yours feels special because those clouds look unusually good, and the light is doing something nice.

4. The Hotel Room Photo

Not every room deserves a photo, but it's exceptionally nice, you know you're going to take out your camera. The minute you get into the room, you do a quick scan and think, “I should take a picture before I make a mess of this place.” It captures the clean bed, the tidy bathroom, and the brief illusion that your suitcase won’t explode across every surface.

5. The Balcony or Window View

If your room has any kind of decent view, there’s no way you’re not photographing it. Maybe it’s a city skyline, maybe it’s the ocean, or maybe it’s just a nice-looking street that looks charming. A view from your room always feels a little more personal than the standard sightseeing shot.

6. The Famous Landmark Picture

Sooner or later, you end up standing in front of the place everyone photographs. You know it’s obvious, and you still do it because it's part of the experience. There’s something satisfying about getting your own version of the classic shot, even if the spot is crowded and you had to wait for your turn. It may be predictable, but it’s also one of the photos you’ll definitely want later.

7. The “I Was Here” Selfie

This is the fast, practical proof that you actually made it to the destination. You hold up the camera, fit yourself and the background into the frame, and hope the lighting is decent enough to work with. Without at least one of these, a trip can weirdly feel undocumented.

8. The Outfit Photo in a Scenic Spot

Travel has a way of making even casual outfits feel more worth photographing. Maybe it’s the cobblestone street, the beach backdrop, or the cute café wall that suddenly makes your outfit pop. You pause for a quick shot, pretend it’s candid, and voila, your new Facebook profile pic is born.

9. The Street With Too Much Character

There’s always one street that makes you stop because it looks like it belongs in a postcard. Maybe it’s lined with colorful buildings, string lights, little shops, or balconies full of plants. You take a few pictures while trying not to get run over by a bike or a local walking with purpose. Those street shots often end up being some of the most charming photos from the whole trip.

10. The Food Before the First Bite

You knew this one was coming. The plate arrives looking outstanding, and your first instinct is to take a picture before anyone touches it. It doesn’t even matter whether it’s a fancy dinner or a sandwich from a tiny local spot.

11. The Coffee Cup at the Café Table

A coffee photo is practically required once you find a place with nice light and a decent table setup, particularly if you're in a destination known for its coffee culture. The cup, the saucer, the little spoon, and the street in the background all combine into something that feels far more artistic than your usual weekday coffee. You might include a book, sunglasses, or a pastry if you’re really committing to the mood.

12. The Local Market Snapshot

Markets are full of color, texture, and things you immediately want to document. Fresh produce, flowers, spices, handmade goods, or rows of pastries tend to make your camera very busy very quickly. Even if it's touristy, it feels like you're capturing the spirit of the place more authentically than if you were to just snap a photo of a landmark.

13. The Sunset Everyone Around You Also Took

No matter how many sunsets you’ve seen, vacation sunsets always seem to demand a photo. The sky starts showing off, everybody nearby reaches for their phones, and you do the exact same thing. You’ll probably take at least five of practically the same photo, and none of them will look as nice as the actual thing right in front of you.

14. The Beach Feet Picture

If the trip involves sand, there’s a strong chance your feet are ending up in at least one shot. It’s a classic vacation move, whether your toes are pointed at the water, stretched out from a lounge chair, or covered in sand after a long walk. The photo screams "relaxation," and it's perfect for when you're there alone but you don't want to take a selfie.

15. The Poolside Angle

Pool photos have their own travel energy. Maybe it’s the water, the chair, the towel, and a drink nearby, or maybe it’s just a clean, blue scene that looks too good to ignore. Even people who don’t usually document every detail tend to make an exception here. There’s something about a pool that makes a trip feel instantly more vacation-like.

16. The Museum or Gallery Photo You Weren’t Sure You’d Be Allowed to Take

You walk into a beautiful museum, double-check for signs, and then quietly take a photo once you realize it’s allowed. Sometimes it’s a famous painting, sometimes it’s the architecture, and sometimes it’s a dramatic-looking hallway. Artistic outings never fail to inspire.

17. The View From the Top

If you climb a tower, hike to a lookout, or reach some rooftop bar with a sweeping view, the camera comes out immediately. It’s one of the most universal travel photos because it's basically the reward for getting up there. Even if your legs are tired, the photo usually makes the effort feel worth it.

18. The Random Doorway or Wall You Found Pretty

Traveling has a way of making you notice little aesthetic details that you wouldn't even see at home, like a pretty door or a textured wall. Something about being in a new place makes colors, tiles, shutters, and old paint feel suddenly irresistible. You stop, take the picture, and accept that it may never make sense to anyone else. Still, those odd little details often become favorites later.

19. The Souvenir Spread

At some point, people like laying out the little things they bought and taking a photo of the collection. Tickets, postcards, small gifts, and other bits of the trip all neatly arranged to look good in a photo frame. These pictures have a way of feeling surprisingly satisfying once you’re home.

20. The Last-Day Photo That Feels Slightly Emotional

Toward the end of the trip, you usually take one final photo that feels a little more sentimental than the others. It might be the view from your last breakfast, your packed suitcase by the door, or one last walk through a place you got attached to. You can tell the trip is winding down, and suddenly every little thing looks worth remembering.
